Watch Your Words

Psalm 92:2(TPT)

I will speak only what is right, guarding what I speak. Like a watchman guards against an attack of the enemy, I’ll  guard and muzzle my mouth when the wicked are around me.

The Church at large has yet to thoroughly grasp the power in our tongue to create our world. Our human ability to speak sets us apart from all of God’s creatures here on earth. The scriptures repeatedly beckon us to understand the power of our words in releasing life or death, and blessing or cursing. 

The writings of Peter, especially, provide keen insight into how the early church was encouraged to communicate  their dissident viewpoints. He admonished  the very Christians facing martyrdom to boldly defend their beliefs without having to return “evil for evil or insult for insult”.  They prized the demonstration of resurrection power that confirmed persuasive speech to influence their audience.

Let’s make sure that God’s word dictates how we respond to those that insult, belittle or unjustly censure us. His vast instruction concerning the tongue actually safeguard us from evil, while also supplying us the necessary wisdom to be peacemakers in a cultural war zone. Deferring to the world’s way of communicating, which too often celebrates the personal destruction of those with whom one disagrees, is not the way of Holy Spirit.  His way is to speak the truth in love.
